“Day of the Dead” is not the “Latin American Halloween.” On Dia de los Muertos, Mexican families visit the spirits of their dead in the cemeteries where they rest. They bring food and other gifts as part of a happy celebration of departed loved ones. Halloween originated with the fear of the sprits of the dead visiting the living so food was offered as bribery for the spirits to do no harm.
